La Sportiva Trail Running Shoe Size Guide
Use the official La Sportiva size chart and our advice to choose your trail running shoe size according to foot length, intended use, running distance and preferred level of support.
How do La Sportiva trail running shoes fit?
La Sportiva trail running shoes mainly use European sizing and are available in half sizes to provide a more precise choice of length and fit.
Your usual shoe size provides an initial reference, but the final choice also depends on the model's shape, foot width, instep volume, sock thickness and running distance.
Two La Sportiva shoes in the same size may therefore feel different. A precise model designed for technical terrain may feel closer than a shoe intended for long distances, even in the same size.

How should you measure your foot?
- Place a sheet of paper against a wall on a flat floor.
- Put on the socks you normally use for running.
- Stand with your heel against the wall.
- Mark the end of your longest toe.
- Measure the distance between the wall and the mark.
- Measure both feet and use the length of the longer foot.
Ideally, measure your feet later in the day, when they may be slightly larger. Length is the first reference, but forefoot width, instep volume and heel shape must also be considered.
Which La Sportiva trail running shoe size should you choose?
Start with your usual shoe size, then check that there is enough room in front of your toes. In trail running, this space is particularly important to prevent your toes from hitting the front of the shoe on descents.
Your foot must nevertheless remain securely held. A shoe that is too large may cause sliding, friction, reduced precision and a loss of stability on technical terrain.
How can you tell whether the size is correct?
Once the shoe is laced, your heel should remain securely held and should not lift excessively while running or climbing.
Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not press heavily against the front of the shoe. Your foot should not slide forwards on descents.
There should be no painful pressure points around the toes, forefoot, instep or heel.
Choosing your size according to distance
Short-distance trail running
Look for a precise fit with good heel and midfoot support. You should nevertheless retain enough space in front of the toes for descents and changes of direction.
Long-distance and ultra-trail running
Your feet may swell after several hours of exercise. It is therefore important to retain enough internal volume without choosing a shoe that is too large. Try the shoes on with your usual socks and, ideally, later in the day.
Technical terrain
Lateral support and precision are essential on rocky, uneven or off-camber terrain. Your foot should not move excessively inside the shoe, while your toes should retain a safe amount of space.
Regular training
Choose a comfortable and stable fit suited to the usual duration of your runs. An excessively close fit may become uncomfortable as the foot swells during exercise.
What should you do if you are between two sizes?
Choose the larger size if your toes touch the front, if you run long distances, if your feet swell considerably or if you use thicker socks.
Choose the smaller size only if your foot clearly lacks support in the larger size and your toes still have sufficient room.
Understanding length and width
Choosing a larger size primarily increases the length of the shoe. It is not always the right solution for a wide foot, as it may create excessive space in front of the toes and reduce heel support.
If the length is correct but the forefoot feels compressed, it may be better to choose a model with a more suitable shape or internal volume rather than automatically increasing the size.
Frequently asked questions about La Sportiva sizing
Do La Sportiva trail running shoes run small?
The fit varies between models. Some shoes intended for technical terrain may feel more precise, while others provide more volume for long distances. Your usual shoe size is the best starting point.
Should I choose a larger size for trail running?
This is not a universal rule. Half a size larger may be useful if your toes touch the front, if your feet swell on long distances or if you are between two sizes. Your heel must nevertheless remain securely held.
How much room should there be in front of my toes?
Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not press heavily against the front of the shoe on descents. The shoe should not be so long that your foot slides inside.
Why is toe room important on descents?
Your foot may move slightly forwards when running downhill. Insufficient room increases the risk of repeated impacts against the toes and discomfort around the toenails.
Do feet swell during trail running?
Yes. Foot volume may increase because of heat, exercise duration and repeated impact. This is particularly important during long-distance events.
Do I need a different size for ultra-trail running?
Not necessarily, but you should account for foot swelling and the length of time the shoes will be worn. The selected size should provide sufficient space without reducing support.
Should I try the shoes on with trail running socks?
Yes. Sock thickness and construction affect the available internal volume. Always try the shoes on with the socks you genuinely intend to use.
Do thick socks require a larger size?
Not automatically, but they take up more volume. Choose the larger size if the shoe becomes too tight or if there is no longer enough room in front of the toes.
Should my heel move inside a trail running shoe?
Your heel should remain securely held. Significant heel lift may encourage friction, blisters and reduced precision on technical terrain.
Do waterproof trail shoes fit differently?
The sizing scale does not necessarily change. However, a waterproof membrane and the internal construction may slightly affect the feeling of volume compared with a non-waterproof version.
Are women's models simply smaller versions?
No. A women's version may provide different volume, heel shape or support. Your choice should primarily depend on your foot shape.
Can I use the same size for road and trail running shoes?
Yes in some cases, although the fit may vary according to the construction and intended use of each model. For trail running, pay particular attention to toe room, heel support and lateral stability.
