How to choose your avalanche transceiver ?

An Avalanche Transceiver (DVA) is a device that both transmits and receives signals, allowing rescuers to quickly locate and save a person buried under the snow—provided that the victim is also wearing a transceiver. This can save valuable time before professional rescue teams arrive.

1. Key Selection Criteria

Choosing between different avalanche transceivers can be challenging. While all certified devices comply with the 457 kHz international standard, their performance and features can vary significantly.
Here are the main points to consider :
umber of antennas : Modern transceivers are equipped with 3 antennas, which allow for more accurate localization in three dimensions (distance, direction, and depth).
- Search strip width (range) : This refers to the maximum width of the area scanned by the transceiver. The greater the range, the faster and more efficient the search.
- Screen readability : Backlit screens or MIP displays provide excellent visibility in bad weather conditions or in bright sunlight.

- Battery life : Good battery life ensures the reliability of the transceiver throughout the entire outing, especially in cold conditions.
- Weight / Compactness : A lightweight and compact transceiver is more comfortable to wear under a jacket and quickly becomes unnoticeable during long days in the mountains.
- Ergonomics : Intuitive menus, buttons that can be operated while wearing gloves, and an easy learning curve are essential—especially in stressful situations.
- Search features : Victim marking, multiple burial management, visual and/or voice guidance, and automatic revert-to-transmit mode are valuable tools that improve efficiency and safety during a rescue.
