How to Take Your Measurements

Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust, underneath your arms and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape measure horizontal.

Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your waist without pulling your stomach in.

Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips.

Sleeve length: measure from the centre of the back of your neck, across your shoulder and down the outside of your arm to your wrist.

Inseam: measure along the inside of your leg, from the crotch to the bottom of your ankle.

To choose the right size for your Black Diamond gloves or mittens, measure the length of your dominant hand. Take the measurement from the crease at the base of your wrist, on the palm side, to the tip of your middle finger.

Keep your hand open and your fingers straight, then compare the measurement with the chart below.

Advice: the glove should follow the shape of your hand without compressing your fingers. If you plan to wear a liner glove, or if your measurement is close to the upper limit of a size, choose the larger size.

To choose your Black Diamond climbing harness, measure your waist and the circumference of the fullest part of your thigh. Take the measurements directly against your body without pulling the tape measure too tightly.

The waistbelt should sit above your hips and remain tight enough that it cannot slide down. The leg loops should hold your legs securely without creating excessive pressure.

Advice: if your waist and thigh measurements correspond to two different sizes, prioritise a secure fit around your waist so that the harness remains correctly positioned above your hips. For winter use, also consider the thickness of the clothing you will wear underneath the harness.

Measure around the widest part of your head, approximately 2 to 3 cm above your eyebrows. Pass the tape measure above your ears and around the back of your head.

Advice: the helmet should remain stable when you move your head without creating pressure around your forehead or temples. For a head circumference between 58 and 59 cm, choose S/M for a closer fit or M/L for extra room, particularly if you plan to wear a thin beanie underneath.

For Black Diamond backpacks available in several sizes, the correct choice mainly depends on your torso length and hip circumference. These measurements refer to your body rather than the dimensions of the backpack.

How to Measure Your Torso Length

Locate your C7 vertebra, the prominent bone at the base of your neck that becomes easier to feel when you tilt your head slightly forward. Then locate your iliac crest, which is the upper edge of your hip bones. Measure the vertical distance between these two points.

How to Measure Your Hip Circumference

Wrap the tape measure around the top of your hips, at the level of your iliac crest, where the backpack’s hipbelt will sit. Do not take this measurement around the narrowest part of your waist.

Advice: if your torso length is between 47 and 48 cm, also use your hip circumference to help you choose between the two sizes. The hipbelt should sit on top of your hips so that your pelvis supports part of the load.
