Black Diamond Crampon Size and Compatibility Guide
Shoe size alone is not enough when choosing Black Diamond crampons. You must first check that the binding system is compatible with your boots, then adjust the crampon length correctly.
Black Diamond crampons feature an adjustment system designed to fit different boot sizes. The exact range and binding components may vary between models, so always check the relevant product page and instructions.
How to choose Black Diamond crampons
Start by identifying the construction of your boots. Check whether they have a rear welt, a front welt, both, or no welts designed for an automatic crampon binding.
Then choose the appropriate binding system and make sure the crampon shape and length fit the boot sole correctly.
Are Black Diamond crampons one size?
Many Black Diamond crampons are supplied in an adjustable size. A centre bar connects the front and rear sections and allows the length to be adapted to the boot.
“One size” does not mean that a crampon automatically fits every boot. Compatibility also depends on sole shape, stiffness, dimensions and binding type.
Which Black Diamond binding system should you choose?
On mobile devices, swipe horizontally to view all columns.
| System | Boot type | Binding principle |
|---|---|---|
| Strap | Boots that do not necessarily have front or rear welts | Straps with front and rear baskets |
| Clip | Boots compatible with a heel lever, generally with a rear welt | Front basket and rear heel lever |
| Pro | Technical boots compatible with automatic front and rear bindings | Front metal bail and rear heel lever |
These descriptions provide initial guidance, but the presence of a welt alone does not guarantee compatibility. The shape and dimensions of the boot must also allow a secure fit.
How to adjust crampon length
Place the crampon under the boot and adjust the centre bar so that the front and rear sections fit the sole correctly.
The heel should sit properly in the rear section and the front of the boot must be securely held, without excessive space or abnormal pressure.
The centre bar should not protrude in a way that interferes with use. Only use the adjustment positions and components specified by Black Diamond for the model.
How to check the fit
Fit the crampon to the boot according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then tighten the binding. The crampon must not move sideways or come away when you handle the boot firmly.
Check that the front and rear sections remain centred beneath the sole, that the straps are routed correctly and that the heel system is fully locked when fitted.
Perform this check with the actual boots you intend to use. Boots with the same marked size can have different shapes and volumes.
What if the crampons seem too short or too long?
First check the centre-bar position. Some models or larger boot sizes may require a different or longer centre bar.
Do not use the crampon if the boot overhangs excessively, the heel is not held securely or the binding cannot be locked correctly.
Frequently asked questions about Black Diamond crampons
Can you choose crampons based only on shoe size?
No. Shoe size helps with length adjustment, but you must also consider boot shape, sole stiffness and the presence of front or rear welts.
Does a Strap binding fit every boot?
Strap bindings generally accommodate more boot types than automatic systems, but the sole must still be sufficiently rigid and the boot shape must allow a secure fit.
What is the difference between Clip and Pro?
Clip generally uses a front basket and a heel lever. Pro uses an automatic metal front bail together with a rear heel lever and requires a specifically compatible boot.
Should crampons be tested before the first outing?
Yes. Fit and adjust them to your boots and practise using the binding before heading into the mountains. Check the adjustment again before every outing.
