Black Diamond uses several size charts depending on the pack range and carrying system. Some models are one size, while others are available in S/M and M/L or from XS to L. Always use the chart shown for the specific model.

How to choose a Black Diamond backpack size

Pack size is not the same as capacity in litres. It mainly depends on your torso length and, for packs with a structured hip belt, your waist circumference.

The correct size helps position the shoulder straps and hip belt properly, keeps the load stable and reduces pressure points while walking.

How to measure torso length

Tilt your head slightly forwards to locate the prominent vertebra at the base of your neck. Place your hands on your hips to identify the top of your hip bones.

Measure vertically from the vertebra at the base of your neck to the imaginary line joining the top of your hips. This is your torso length.

How to measure waist circumference

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the top of your hips, where the pack’s hip belt will sit. Keep the tape level and close to the body without pulling it too tightly.

What about one-size Black Diamond packs?

Some compact packs and models without a structured hip belt are supplied in one size. You do not need to select a torso length, but the shoulder straps and webbing must still provide a comfortable and stable fit.

What if you are between two sizes?

If your torso length falls within the overlap between two sizes, also check your waist measurement and try the pack with a realistic load.

The hip belt should sit over the top of your hips, the shoulder straps should follow your shoulders without a large gap and the pack should not pull excessively backwards.

How to check the pack adjustment

Loosen all straps first, put the loaded pack on and adjust the hip belt. Then tighten the shoulder straps and load lifters without compressing your chest excessively.

Walk for a few minutes with the pack loaded. The weight should remain close to your back and the pack should not bounce or create painful pressure points.
