How to Choose Your Skis — Follow the Guide!

Lost in the avalanche of models? This guide explains how to choose the right men’s, women’s, or kids’ skis and the right bindings based on your style, level, and body type.

What Type of Skis Should You Choose?

Pick your category according to terrain and goals. Here are the five main families.

Piste Skis (Carving)

  • Waist width: 60–80 mm.
  • Short + small radius (< 15 m) for easy turns.
  • Longer + bigger radius (15–20 m) for stability at speed.

All-Mountain Skis

  • Waist width: 80–99 mm.
  • Often feature rocker for float and comfort.
  • Versatile — the SUV of skis.

Freeride Skis

  • Waist width: 100+ mm.
  • Pronounced rocker for float.
  • For powder and steeps.

Freestyle Skis

  • Twin-tip for switch skiing.
  • Light, reinforced for park.
  • Agile and playful.

Touring & Freerando Skis

  • 75–95 mm touring: light for climbs.
  • 95 mm+ freerando: better float downhill.
  • Tip rocker for powder fun.

Don’t forget: touring boots, skins & avalanche safety gear.

Which Skis for Your Level & Body Type?

Beginner to Intermediate

  • 15 cm shorter than your height for control.
  • Soft, forgiving, light skis.
  • Mini-skis (~120 cm) for max maneuverability.

Advanced to Expert

  • Close to your height.
  • Stiffer builds for piste/All-Mountain.
  • Playful skis for off-piste/park.

Body Type

  • Heavier skiers > 90 kg: longer, stiffer skis.
  • Women’s skis: lighter, adapted designs.
  • Kids’ skis: easy to turn, sized for progression.
