Scarpa Footwear Size Guide

Use the official Scarpa conversion chart and our fitting advice to choose the right size for hiking, trekking, approach or mountaineering footwear.

How does Scarpa footwear fit?

Scarpa hiking, trekking, approach and mountaineering footwear uses European sizing. Half sizes provide a more precise choice of length and fit according to your foot shape and intended use.

Your usual shoe size is generally a good starting point. However, footwear designed for walking must provide enough room in front of the toes to prevent them from hitting the front of the shoe, particularly on descents.

For mountaineering boots, Scarpa states that you may choose half a size larger depending on the desired fit, the socks worn and the conditions of use.

How should you measure your foot?

  1. Place a sheet of paper against a wall on a flat floor.
  2. Put on the socks you intend to wear with the footwear.
  3. Stand with your heel against the wall and your weight evenly distributed.
  4. Mark the end of your longest toe.
  5. Measure the distance between the edge of the paper and the mark.
  6. Measure both feet and use the measurement of the longer foot.

Foot length is only a starting point. Width, instep volume, heel shape and the specific fit of each model must also be considered.

How can you tell whether the size is correct?

Try the footwear on later in the day, when your feet may be slightly larger, and wear the socks intended for your activity.

Once the shoe or boot is correctly laced, the heel should remain securely held. Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not hit the front when walking or simulating a descent.

Footwear that is too small can compress the foot and cause the toes to hit the front. Footwear that is too large may allow the foot to slide, reduce precision and create friction.

Which size should you choose for your activity?

Day hiking

Start with your usual shoe size. Make sure there is enough room in front of the toes while the heel remains securely supported.

Trekking and long-distance hiking

Consider natural foot swelling after several hours of walking, the thickness of your socks and the weight of your pack. The footwear should remain comfortable without feeling loose or imprecise.

Approach footwear

Approach footwear may have a more precise fit than standard hiking footwear. Your foot should be securely supported on technical terrain while retaining the space required for walking.

Mountaineering and high-altitude use

Scarpa states that half a size larger may be selected depending on the desired fit. Consider technical socks, cold conditions, activity duration and natural foot swelling.

Models with an integrated gaiter

An integrated gaiter does not automatically require a different size. Follow the Scarpa European sizing chart and check the internal support, toe room and compatibility with your socks.

What should you do if you are between two sizes?

Generally choose the larger size if your toes touch the front, if you wear thick socks or if you need more room for prolonged use or cold conditions.

Choose the smaller size only if your foot clearly lacks support in the larger size and your toes still have sufficient space.

Frequently asked questions about Scarpa sizing

Does Scarpa footwear run small?

There is no single answer for every model. Scarpa uses European sizing, but the internal volume and shape vary according to the collection and intended use. Your usual size is the best starting point.

Should I choose half a size larger in Scarpa footwear?

Not automatically. For mountaineering boots, Scarpa states that half a size larger may be chosen depending on the desired fit. For other footwear, focus primarily on toe room and heel support.

How much room should there be in front of my toes?

Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not hit the front of the footwear on descents. However, the shoe should not be so long that your foot slides inside.

Should I try the footwear on with hiking socks?

Yes. Scarpa recommends trying footwear on with trekking socks, ideally the same socks you intend to wear during use.

Do thick socks mean I need a larger size?

Not necessarily, but thick socks take up more internal volume. Try the footwear with your usual socks and choose the larger size if the initial size compresses your foot or leaves insufficient toe room.

Is Scarpa footwear suitable for wide feet?

This depends on the model. Two products in the same size may offer different volumes around the forefoot, instep and heel. Always check the specifications of the individual model.

Are women's models simply smaller versions of men's footwear?

No. Women's versions may use a different volume and construction to suit a different foot shape. However, the final choice should primarily depend on your own foot and the quality of the fit.

Can I choose the same size for hiking and mountaineering?

Not always. Mountaineering boots may be worn with thicker socks and in colder conditions. Scarpa therefore allows for half a size larger depending on the desired fit.

Should my heel move inside Scarpa footwear?

Your heel should remain securely supported. A small amount of movement may occur depending on your foot shape, but significant heel lift can cause friction and reduce precision.

Does Scarpa use Mondo sizing for this footwear?

No. The hiking, trekking, approach and mountaineering footwear covered by this guide uses European sizing. Mondo sizing is reserved for Scarpa ski mountaineering and telemark boots.
