Scarpa Climbing Shoe Size Guide

Find Scarpa’s official sizing advice to choose your climbing shoes according to your usual shoe size, climbing level and desired level of precision.

How do Scarpa climbing shoes fit?

Scarpa climbing shoes use European sizing. Half sizes provide a more precise fit and make it easier to balance comfort, support and performance.

Scarpa recommends choosing your usual shoe size for a good balance between comfort and precision.

Experienced climbers looking for maximum precision at the expense of comfort may choose half a size below their usual shoe size.

Which Scarpa climbing shoe size should you choose?

Climbing level and use Recommended size Desired fit
Beginner or occasional climber Usual shoe size Secure fit without excessive compression
Multi-pitch climbing or long sessions Usual shoe size Long-lasting comfort and secure support
Regular indoor or outdoor climbing Usual shoe size, adjusted according to the model A balance between comfort and precision
Experienced performance-focused climber Up to half a size smaller Maximum precision with reduced comfort

These recommendations provide a starting point. Your final choice also depends on your foot shape, the volume of the model and your tolerance for a tight fit.

How can you tell whether the size is correct?

Your foot should be held securely inside a climbing shoe, without a significant gap at the front. Unlike hiking or everyday footwear, extra space in front of the toes is not required.

Your toes may be slightly curled depending on the shape and technical level of the shoe. Your heel should remain securely in place without lifting while climbing.

A precise climbing shoe may feel tight, but it should not cause excessive pain, unbearable pressure points or numbness.

Choosing your size according to your climbing style

For beginners

Choose your usual shoe size. A close but comfortable fit will allow you to focus on technique and keep your shoes on throughout the session.

For multi-pitch climbing

Comfort is essential when climbing shoes are worn for long periods. Your usual shoe size is generally the most suitable choice.

For indoor and sport climbing

Look for a precise fit without empty space at the front of the shoe. Start with your usual size, then adjust according to the shape of the model and your preferences.

For bouldering and performance climbing

Experienced climbers may choose half a size smaller to increase precision and sensitivity. This choice will, however, reduce comfort.

Do lace-up and Velcro climbing shoes fit differently?

The fastening system does not change Scarpa’s sizing scale. The same size recommendations therefore apply to both lace-up and Velcro climbing shoes.

Laces generally allow precise adjustment across the whole foot. Velcro straps make the shoes quicker to put on and remove between routes or boulder problems.

What should you do if you are between two sizes?

Choose the larger size if comfort is your priority, if you are a beginner or if you intend to wear the shoes for long periods.

Choose the smaller size if you are experienced, used to close-fitting climbing shoes and primarily looking for precision.

Frequently asked questions about Scarpa sizing

Do Scarpa climbing shoes run small?

Scarpa recommends starting with your usual shoe size. The fit may nevertheless vary according to the shape, volume and technical level of each model.

Should I choose the same size as my everyday shoes?

Yes. Your usual shoe size is Scarpa’s recommended starting point. Experienced climbers looking for greater precision may consider choosing half a size smaller.

Should I size down by one or two full sizes?

Scarpa does not recommend systematically choosing one or two full sizes below your usual size. The official recommendation is to choose your usual size, or possibly half a size smaller for a very precise fit.

Why should there be no space in front of the toes?

Removing empty space at the front of the shoe improves sensitivity and precision on footholds. The extra room required in walking footwear is therefore not desirable in a climbing shoe.

Should my toes be curled?

They may be slightly curled, particularly in a technical or asymmetric shoe. However, the shoe should not cause excessive pain.

Should my heel move inside the shoe?

No. Your heel should remain securely held and should not lift when standing on footholds or performing heel hooks.

Do Velcro climbing shoes fit differently from lace-up models?

No. The fastening system does not affect the shoe size. However, the volume and shape may vary from one model to another.

Are Scarpa climbing shoes suitable for wide feet?

This depends on the model. Scarpa uses different lasts and offers both standard and lower-volume versions. Check the product specifications to identify the shape best suited to your foot.

Does a Low Volume model correspond to a smaller shoe size?

No. A Low Volume or LV model has the same length for a given size but generally provides less internal volume, particularly around the instep and heel.
