La Sportiva Climbing Shoe Size Guide

Use the official La Sportiva conversion chart and our advice to choose your climbing shoe size according to your usual shoe size, experience, climbing style and preferred balance between comfort and precision.

How do La Sportiva climbing shoes fit?

La Sportiva climbing shoes use European sizing, with half sizes allowing climbers to fine-tune the fit.

Your usual shoe size provides an initial reference, but it is not always enough to determine the ideal size. Your choice also depends on the model, its shape, internal volume, materials and your preferred balance between comfort and precision.

Two La Sportiva climbing shoes in the same size may therefore feel very different. A relatively soft, neutral model will generally feel more comfortable than a highly asymmetric and downturned shoe in the same size.

Which La Sportiva climbing shoe size should you choose?

There is no universal size reduction that applies to every La Sportiva climbing shoe. Start with your usual shoe size, then adjust according to the model's shape, your experience and how long you intend to wear the shoes.

A climbing shoe should hold the foot securely without significant empty space around the heel or in front of the toes. It may feel tight, but it should not cause excessive pain, numbness or unbearable pressure points.

Choosing your size according to your climbing style

For beginners

Choose a close but comfortable fit. Shoes that are excessively tight may prevent you from keeping them on and make learning less enjoyable.

For multi-pitch climbing

Comfort is essential when climbing shoes are worn for long periods. Avoid an excessively restrictive fit and make sure your toes are not subjected to painful pressure.

For indoor and outdoor sport climbing

Look for a good balance between support, sensitivity and comfort. Your heel should remain secure and there should be no significant empty space at the front.

For bouldering and performance climbing

Experienced climbers may choose a more precise fit to improve power transfer and sensitivity on small footholds. The ideal level of tightness remains personal and depends heavily on the model.

What is the difference between neutral, moderate and aggressive shoes?

A neutral climbing shoe generally keeps the foot in a relatively natural position. It is particularly suitable for beginners, long sessions and multi-pitch climbing.

A moderate shoe provides greater precision while retaining a degree of versatility. It can suit regular indoor and outdoor climbing.

An aggressive shoe has a more downturned and often more asymmetric shape. It concentrates power towards the front of the foot for technical moves, bouldering and difficult routes. It may feel more restrictive in the same size.

How can you tell whether the size is correct?

Your heel should be securely wrapped and should not lift when standing on footholds or performing heel hooks. There should not be a significant air pocket around the foot.

Your toes may be slightly curled depending on the shape of the shoe. However, they should not be compressed to the point of causing excessive pain.

The fastening system should secure the foot without requiring the laces or straps to be tightened fully to compensate for excessive internal volume.

What should you do if you are between two sizes?

Choose the larger size if you are a beginner, if comfort is your priority or if you intend to wear the shoes for long periods.

Choose the smaller size if you are experienced, used to close-fitting climbing shoes and looking for greater precision, provided the fit does not cause excessive pain.

Frequently asked questions about La Sportiva sizing

Do La Sportiva climbing shoes run small?

The fit varies considerably between models. Shape, internal volume, asymmetry and downturn influence the way a shoe feels just as much as the size printed on it.

Should I choose several sizes below my usual shoe size?

This is not a universal rule. Any size reduction depends on the model, your climbing style and your tolerance for a tight fit. Start with your usual size and adjust gradually rather than applying the same reduction to every shoe.

Why do two models in the same size feel different?

Each climbing shoe uses its own shape. Forefoot width, heel volume, instep height, downturn and asymmetry may vary between models.

Do Velcro shoes fit differently from lace-up models?

The fastening system does not directly change the sizing scale. Laces generally provide more precise adjustment across the whole foot, while straps make the shoes quicker to put on and remove.

Do leather climbing shoes stretch?

Leather can soften and gradually adapt to the foot. The change in volume nevertheless depends on the construction of the shoe and whether it is lined.

Do synthetic climbing shoes stretch?

Synthetic materials generally retain their original shape more than leather. The shoe may soften with use, but its internal volume often changes less.

Does a Woman or Low Volume model correspond to a smaller size?

No. A Woman or Low Volume version is not simply shorter. It may provide less internal volume around the heel, instep or forefoot while retaining the same length for a given size.

Are Woman models only suitable for women?

No. The choice primarily depends on foot shape. A lower-volume version may suit anyone with a narrow foot or a low-volume heel.

Should my toes be curled inside a climbing shoe?

They may be slightly curled, particularly in a technical or aggressive shoe. However, a severely painful position is not required to achieve a precise fit.

Should my heel move inside the shoe?

No. Your heel should remain securely held during normal footholds and heel hooks. Significant heel lift may reduce precision and indicate that the shape or volume is unsuitable.

How should I choose climbing shoes for a child?

Prioritise comfort and avoid deliberately undersizing children's climbing shoes. The foot should remain securely held without painful compression, while allowing for growth.
