La Sportiva Footwear Size Guide

Use the official La Sportiva conversion chart and our fitting advice to choose the right size for hiking, trekking, approach, mountaineering or high-altitude footwear.

How does La Sportiva footwear fit?

La Sportiva footwear mainly uses European sizing and is available in half sizes to provide a more precise choice of length and fit.

Your usual shoe size is generally a good starting point. The final choice nevertheless depends on the model, foot width, instep volume, socks worn and intended use.

Two La Sportiva shoes in the same size may feel different. A technical approach shoe may provide a closer fit than a hiking or trekking model, while mountaineering footwear must retain enough toe room for cold conditions.

How should you measure your foot?

  1. Place a sheet of paper against a wall on a flat floor.
  2. Put on the socks intended for your activity.
  3. Stand with your heel against the wall.
  4. Mark the end of your longest toe.
  5. Measure the distance between the wall and the mark.
  6. Measure both feet and use the length of the longer foot.

Foot length is only the first reference. Width, instep volume and heel shape must also be considered.

How can you tell whether the size is correct?

Try the footwear on with the socks intended for your activity, ideally later in the day when your feet may be slightly larger.

Once the shoe or boot is correctly laced, the heel should remain securely held. Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not hit the front when walking or descending.

Footwear that is too small can compress the toes and cause pain. Footwear that is too large may allow the foot to slide, cause friction and reduce precision.

Which size should you choose for your activity?

Day hiking

Start with your usual shoe size. Check that the heel remains securely held and that your toes have enough room, particularly on descents.

Trekking and long-distance hiking

Consider natural foot swelling after several hours of walking, sock thickness and pack weight. The fit should remain comfortable without becoming too loose.

Approach footwear

Approach footwear may provide a more precise fit than standard hiking footwear. Your foot should be securely supported on technical terrain while retaining enough room for comfortable walking.

Mountaineering and high-altitude use

Consider technical socks, cold conditions and activity duration. Your toes should not be compressed, as an excessively tight fit may restrict blood circulation and increase the sensation of cold.

Models with an integrated gaiter

An integrated gaiter does not necessarily require a different size. Focus on internal support, toe room and compatibility with the socks you intend to wear.

What should you do if you are between two sizes?

Choose the larger size if your toes touch the front, if you wear thick socks or if you need more room for prolonged use or cold conditions.

Choose the smaller size only if your foot clearly lacks support in the larger size and your toes still have sufficient space.

Frequently asked questions about La Sportiva sizing

Does La Sportiva footwear run small?

The fit varies according to the model and intended use. Your usual size is the best starting point, although some technical footwear may feel closer or more precise.

Should I choose half a size larger in La Sportiva footwear?

Not automatically. Half a size larger may be useful if your toes touch the front, if you wear thick socks or if you plan long outings. However, heel support must remain sufficient.

How much room should there be in front of my toes?

Your toes should be able to move slightly and should not hit the front on descents. However, the shoe should not be so long that your foot slides inside.

Should I try the footwear on with hiking socks?

Yes. Always try the footwear on with the socks you genuinely intend to wear, as their thickness affects the available internal volume.

Do thick socks mean I need a larger size?

Not necessarily, but they take up more volume. Choose the larger size if the initial size compresses the foot or leaves insufficient toe room.

Is La Sportiva footwear suitable for wide feet?

This depends on the model. Forefoot width, instep volume and heel shape may vary between collections. Check the specifications of each product to identify the most suitable fit.

Are women's models simply smaller versions?

No. A women's version may offer different volume and support, particularly around the heel and instep. Your choice should primarily depend on your foot shape.

Can I choose the same size for hiking and mountaineering?

Not always. Mountaineering boots may be worn with warmer socks and in colder conditions. It is therefore important to check toe room and ensure there is no excessive compression.

Should my heel move inside La Sportiva footwear?

Your heel should remain securely held. Significant heel lift encourages friction, blisters and a lack of precision.

Should approach shoes fit as tightly as climbing shoes?

No. Approach footwear should provide precision on technical terrain while remaining comfortable for walking and retaining room in front of the toes.

Should mountaineering boots fit very tightly for precision?

They should hold the foot securely without strongly compressing the toes. An excessively tight fit may restrict blood circulation and reduce thermal comfort.
